Baby Acne – Symptoms Causes Tests Diagnosis & Treatment

Baby Acne SymptomsAcne develops on babies skin as well as adults, most commonly you will find acne on a baby’s cheeks, chin, and forehead. It is very common to see acne on a baby, but don’t worry it’s only temporary. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, and the best treatment is to do nothing. The acne will go away on its own so there is no need for you to do anything.

You can tell easily if your baby has acne, you will see small red bumps on the cheeks, forehead, and chin. With acne being so easy to see there is no need to go through testing to see what the bumps are. Usually you will see the acne within the first 3-4 weeks after the child’s birth. It looks its worst when a baby is crying because it brings out the color and makes it more visible. Most infants will have white bumps as well as red bumps, these white bumps are called milia. Milia is common like acne, it is generally seen in newborns, it is caused from flakes of skin getting inside small pockets near the surface of the skin. The flakes of skin that are inside the pockets are usually from the peeling that occurs after a baby is born, this is normal.

No treatment is needed for the common baby’s acne, because for the most part the acne will disappear within a several weeks. If the acne does persist you can talk to your pediatrician and he or she may suggest using a medicated cream or other treatment. Very rarely there may be a condition that is causing your baby’s acne problems which may need to be treated too, but this is very uncommon.

To help with the acne that the baby has there are a few things you can do. Make sure to keep the baby’s face clean by washing it with warm water 2-3 times a day using a mild moisturizing soap and then rinsing with warm water. When washing your baby’s face try not scrub or pinch the acne, this will irritate the skin and possibly cause an infection. When you are done washing the face don’t dry it too hard, gently pat the skin dry. Lastly try not to use lotions or oils on the baby’s skin because this may cause more bumps or make the existing acne worse.
