Green Tea During Pregnancy

If you consult your doctor or read some health magazines or internet then you may get to know that drinking green tea is not good for pregnant women. You may think that green tea which is so beneficial for normal people should also be good for pregnant women. However, it is not the case. Pregnant women should control their green tea intake or any supplements which offer green tea. EGCG, which is present in green tea, is not good for the folate. It affects the way in which folate is used by the body of a pregnant woman. In order to prevent neural tube birth defects in new born babies, folate is necessary.

It is unclear that how much amount of green tea is safe for consumption by pregnant women. It is also not clear that how much folate absorption is affected by consuming green tea by women during pregnancy. Apart from EGCG, caffeine is also present in green tea. There are a lot of studies which have proved that caffeine is not at all good for pregnant women. Caffeine can cause miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women. Also, those women who consume excess caffeine through green tea also have a risk of giving birth to babies which have very less weight. It should also be noticed that the amount of caffeine and green tea which is consumed by pregnant women largely decides whether the health of a baby is affected or not.

It is also true that some studies also suggest that if green tea is taken in moderate amounts by pregnant women then it causes no problems. Pregnant women who consume two cups of green tea during pregnancy may lower down the risk of development of cancer cells in the body. From this information, we get to know that if taken in lesser amounts, green tea does not cause problems in pregnant women. However, one cannot ignore the fact that all these are just assumptions. There is no accurate report which suggests the safe level of green tea that may be consumed by pregnant women.
