Handling Teenage Pregnancy

Finding out that one is pregnant at such a young age can be quite a shock for any teenager. Teenage girls who become pregnant often find themselves in a situation where they cannot share the news with anyone, nor can they handle it all by themselves. This can be a very distressing time, but like all other problems, this too can be handled in a better way.

If you’re a teen, you will probably have no idea what to do. Most teen pregnancies end with hushed up abortions because they don’t know what else to do. You as a woman have been blessed with the power of giving life. Understand and respect that. Blindly opting for an abortion is no less than murder. What has happened has happened. Discuss it with your parents (or your mother if you find that more comfortable). They are your parents and always think of your betterment. Even if you have to end your pregnancy, it is best to do it with your parents’ knowledge.

If you’re a parent, it is understandable that you may be shocked and even furious at what you’ve just found out. But you as a parent need to acknowledge the fact that your daughter needs you more than ever at a time like this. There is a reason why you’re the mother and she’s the daughter. Reacting on impulse can lead to a major communication barrier between you and your daughter which may not be the best thing for her. So discuss the matter peacefully and come to a conclusion about whether she should abort or give birth. Under no circumstances should you force her to terminate the pregnancy.

If the decision is to abort the child, there are two common ways of doing this. The safest abortions take place during the first nine to twelve weeks as timed from the last menstrual cycle. One way is through drugs (commonly methotrexate followed by misoprostol). This method takes time and can be accompanied by pain and bleeding. Do not hesitate to call your doctor whenever you feel the need. The other option of course is through surgery wherein the foetus is surgically removed from the body. Whatever the method, the parent’s emotional support is very important.

If the decision is to give birth, then you mom, need to give your daughter all the care that you can. This is where your experience as a mom will come in handy. You will need to take care of her diet, exercise and medication. And most of all, you will need to treat her with love and care because your daughter is not a girl anymore, but she’s not yet a woman either.
