Initial Stages of Labor

The duration of the initial stages of labor takes a day, usually starting slowly and then quickening when the dilation of the cervix reaches about 5 centimeters. At first your contractions will not be so clear, but they will become stronger, longer as well as closer together with time variations later.

They observe every half an hour, check your pulse and the fetal heart, temperature, blood pressure, on four hourly basis and they will note the strength and frequency of contractions. They will become stronger and more frequent as labor progresses. They will note when membranes rupture, this is often a signal of the onset of second stage.

When you have examined and prepared, you may walk around, or rest as you wish. They encourage you to empty your bladder frequently and to take nourishing drinks from time to time.
If the initial state is longer than twelve hours or a day, you should send for the health worker or her supervisor FHA as well as referring to the doctor. Also report if there is lack of progress in labor, signs of fetal distress or other abnormalities.
