Tips for taking the Best Care of your Baby Skin

Baby SkinBringing your baby home comes with a lot of paranoid thoughts. What will happen if I do this or how do I do that? These are common questions people have when raising their children. One thing you have to make sure of, is that you are taking care of your baby’s skin is very important because it is so delicate, just like their immune system. That is why when you have your baby at home with you be careful of chemical, detergents, fragrances, and certain baby products because they can irritate the baby’s skin and cause problems. These problems can consist of dryness, chafing, and rashes. Sometimes these skin problems are severe, in which case you would need to consult a pediatrician. For the most part however, the skin problems are mild and will go away on their own.

A newborn baby’s skin is going to peel, now don’t get paranoid. This is normal because when the baby is born they have wrinkly skin with a protective covering called vernix that peels away leaving soft delicate skin. This will happen in the first week of having the baby at home with you, let the process happen on its own. You don’t need to rub it or put lotions and creams on it, this is a natural process and will happen by itself.

Because the baby’s skin is so delicate you should only bathe them a few times a week this will keep them from exposure to potent chemicals. This is one of the reasons why you shouldn’t use baby products in the early months of having your child at home. With the immune system not being fully developed yet you should take extreme caution with what products you are using, especially if you have a family history of skin problems, allergies, or asthma. Before you put any clothes on your baby make sure they are washed first, and when you do wash them use only laundry detergents for babies. Meaning that you need to use a detergent that is fragrance and dye free. Wash all baby clothes, bedding, and blankets separately from any other linens in the house and give everything an extra run through the rinse cycle.

Remember one thing newborns will not be getting very dirty, other than the drooling and diaper changes you will not have to worry too much about the bathing.
